The Lake Dallas ISD Board of Trustees adopted a new calendar for the 2017-18 at the monthly meeting on February 20.
The calendar differs slightly from the calendar framework that has been used in recent years by setting an earlier start date of August 16 and ending the last full week in May and before Memorial Day. The calendar does have the same holidays as before – Labor Day, Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, MLK, and Spring Break (March). But, it does add several more student breaks. The change was made possible when the Board adopted the Lake Dallas ISD School of Innovation plan which allows the district some leeway regarding TEA mandates which includes the school year.
“By becoming a District of Innovation, the District is able to adjust the student start date in the 2017-2018 school year,” Dr. Marci Malcom, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction said. “Making this change will help us meet the Board’s goal for an innovative curriculum by balancing the instructional time in the first and second semesters and providing teachers with an instructional planning day prior to each grading period.”
The calendar meets the minute requirement for students as well as the 187-day requirement for teachers. What the plan does not change are the UIL mandated times for extra-curricular activities. Those dates remain unchanged. In other words, the start time for football, band, volleyball and cross-country remain unchanged.
